Progress vs Progress | VR Prototype
/Graphic Design/Visual Narrative /World building /Research
This project is a research-driven Vr installation that explores the tension between urban redevelopment and the erasure of cultural memory in Rotterdam as a "What if Rotterdam never got bombed" situation, The project is set in an alternative version of the city, where historic streets and buildings have survived, only to be threatened decades later by a new form of destruction: large-scale, standardised redevelopment.

The installation presents "progress" as a conflict. While the municipality promotes efficiency and modernisation through clean, controlled architecture, citizens resist the erasure of history, memory, and lived experience. This struggle is communicated through the city itself: billboards, hacked screens, protest posters, and graffiti guide the player through the environment and reveal opposing narratives.

The project explores how visual communication functions within an immersive, spatial context. Traditional graphic elements, such as posters, typography, and signage are remained as part of the environment, becoming tools for storytelling and resistance rather than static design.

Progress vs Progress combines historical research, visual narrative, and world building to question whether a city's future must come at the cost of its past.
